We are looking for people who have a passion for guiding students in the outdoors and have a heart for the camping industry. We believe the positive outdoor experience that Outdoor School provides is essential and provides a critical connection between the student and the material they are learning in schools. Situated in one of the most beautiful spots in Oklahoma, YMCA Camp Classen is the perfect place for students to explore an amazingly diverse ecosystem, bringing their textbooks to life.

 

At YMCA Camp Classen you will have the opportunity to teach in an amazing setting. Located at the intersection of two major biomes, with lakes, streams, waterfalls, fossil beds and unique geological features, a fantastic experience awaits you and your campers.

 

As an Outdoor School Instructor you will be trained, among other things, to:

• teach our interpretive hiking trail classes

• lead camp activities (archery, kayaks, fire building, tomahawks, atlatls, etc.)

• certified in CPR, AED, and Oxygen Administration

• optional: YMCA Lifeguard Certification

Requirements

Qualifications

· 18 years of age or older

· Strong Communication skills

· Ability to lead day hikes and other outdoor activities

· Ability to relate to individuals and groups in a warm, positive manner

· Willingness to take on varied tasks that support the program

Preferred

· Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record

· Lifeguard certification

· Experience with team-building curriculum

· Understanding of basic natural history and environmental education concepts

 

EMPLOYMENT DATES

§ Fall Instructors typically begin around the end of August and continue until early December.

§ Spring Instructors typically begin mid-February and continue through the end of May.

COMPENSATION AND AMENITIES

Starting at $80 / day. Additional income opportunities available on weekends.

Uniforms are provided, additional clothing allowance.

Semi private housing, shared apartments. 

Meals are provided when dining hall is open.

All training certification costs and time are paid for.

Free laundry facilities and wifi are located in or near staff housing.

Travel stipend available.
