Employer Profile

Today, Fastenal is many things to many different customers, an expert consultant, a logistics company, a technology provider, and more generally a distributor of wide-ranging industrial and construction products. These aspects of service share a common foundation: great people, close to our customers.

Our service model centers on approximately 3,200 in-market locations (a combination of public branches and customer-specific onsites), each providing custom inventory and a dedicated sales team to support local customers. These locations are supported by our global distribution network, a closely-aligned supplier network, robust sourcing, quality and manufacturing resources, and multiple teams of subject matter experts and support personnel – all working toward Fastenal’s common goal of Growth Through Customer Service®.

People

Like any organization, we succeed to the extent that we bring out and utilize the creativity of each team member. The key: a culture that challenges and empowers people rather than placing limits on them. Here are a few foundational principles:

Decentralization: relying on those closest to the customer (or the issue at hand) to think creatively, make decisions, and take effective action. The result is an environment where innovation flows from every direction, not just from the top down.

Opportunity: By rewarding success and developing leaders internally, we foster an exceptionally motivated and engaged team – entrepreneurial individuals who “think big” for our company and our customers.

Training: Each year, Fastenal employees complete roughly hundreds of thousands of courses via the Fastenal School of Business (our multi-platform corporate university), on average receiving 16 hours of FSB training during the year to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Community

When Fastenal went public in 1987, our company founders set aside more than a quarter of the IPO shares to create an educational endowment for local schools. This spirit of community connection remains central to our culture, today shining through in thousands of cities and towns where our local “Blue Teams” work, live, lead, and give back. A few notable examples:

Blue Team Sports®: An athletic uniform program available to Fastenal employees and their family members who participate in sports programs in their communities.

Trinona®: The world’s “biggest little” triathlon, presented by Fastenal.

BK-5K: An annual race/fundraiser with all proceeds supporting various youth programs demonstrating financial need.

Sustainability

Fastenal helps businesses and organizations achieve their sustainability goals through efficient distribution, a comprehensive green product offering, and a lineup of recycling programs.

Green Products: Looking to drive sustainability across multiple categories? We maintain a comprehensive green product offering from key vendors for national distribution. We can also provide custom reporting to help you monitor progress towards your sustainability requirements or goals.

Recycling Programs: Implementing a recycling program doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. Utilize our vendor partnership programs to introduce turnkey recycling solutions for a variety of materials.

Green Machines: Vending typically drives around a 25% reduction in product consumption through automated controls and reporting. If you apply that rate to Fastenal’s total vended sales (around $1 billion per year), that’s an estimated $130 million worth of product that is not packaged and transported, not consumed, and not destined for a landfill.

Supply Chain Efficiency: When you partner with Fastenal to avoid over-consumption, obsolete inventory, redundant purchases, expedited ordering, and overlapping deliveries from multiple vendors, you’re taking waste out of your business and the environment – with fewer materials consumed and fewer carbon emissions produced.
